Games that survive a phone call
Your phone is a phone. It will ring, buzz, and demand your attention mid-game, and the best mobile games plan for exactly that. The worst ones punish you for answering a text.
Turn-based RPGs and strategy games are naturally interruption-proof — the game simply waits. That's a huge part of why they feel so good on a commute, even if their battery and screen-size trade-offs are real.
The surprise winners are well-made arcade and casual games that save state aggressively. Close the app mid-round, come back later, and you're exactly where you left off. It feels small until you've lost a great run to an incoming call.
When I test a game, I now deliberately interrupt it. I background it, I lock the screen, I fake a call. How it handles that moment tells me whether the developers actually used their own game on a real phone.
If a title throws away your progress because you stepped away for thirty seconds, it's not a mobile game. It's a desktop game wearing a disguise.
