The settings menu is the first level

June 10, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

I've learned to treat the settings menu as the real first level of any mobile game. The defaults are almost never tuned for how you actually play, and five minutes of fiddling fixes most early frustration.

Start with controls. Swap tilt steering for taps in racers, shrink oversized buttons, and look for a sensitivity slider. Most games ship with sensitivity set too high for larger screens.

Then kill the noise. Separate music and effect volume sliders are a gift — turn down the menu loops and keep the gameplay sounds that give you useful feedback. Haptics are worth testing on and off, since some games use them brilliantly and others just buzz.

Finally, find the performance toggles. A 'battery saver' or frame-rate cap can double your play time on a long day, usually with a visual hit you won't notice in motion.

None of this is glamorous, but it's the difference between a game that annoys you by hour two and one that feels like it was built for your phone.
